SUSSEX ART FAIR 2025

at Goodwood Racecourse

Friday 9th May, 5.00pm–8.00pm: Preview Evening
Saturday & Sunday 10th & 11th May, 11.00am– 5.00pm

Returning for a sixth event at the world-renowned Goodwood Racecourse in the heart of the picturesque Sussex Downs, 90+ exhibitors, each of whom you will be able to meet, will be situated throughout the main hall of The March Stand with 3000+ artworks for purchase.

The event has been curated by the SAF team to include established and emerging independent artists specialising in: Painting, Digital Art, Photography, Sculpture, Mixed Media Art, Glassworks and Ceramics. Spread over three days and starting on Friday 9th May at The Preview Evening, visitors will be the first to view the collections of artists' work along with a glass of fizz before the event opens at the weekend to the general public. Prices of art start from as little as £50 for prints and smaller works to over £3,000 for outstanding masterpieces, so there will be something to suit every budget.

Summer School Intensive Workshops and Courses

Are you looking for a new activity to take your mind off all the craziness going on in the world today whether it be world news headlines or just to escape those mundane daily tasks? Perhaps we have the answer? We run weekly ongoing sculpture and life drawing courses all year round that you can join anytime. But in July, our exciting Summer School consists of a variety of short intensive courses.

For example, five-day workshops in figurative and portrait sculpture; fancy large scale drawing? Try the Draw Big Life Drawing bonanza; two-day workshop in acrylic painting, from figurative to abstract subjects; learn to create, make and take home a garden sculpture of your own design.

WEST DEAN 

Celebrating Japanese crafts

West Dean was founded with a mission to preserve traditional crafts in the face of an era of rapid industrialisation. Fifty years on from its inception and this institution continues to uphold this foundational commitment. West Dean’s Japanese week scheduled for the last week of May is not just an opportunity to explore calligraphy, woodblock printing, pottery and more, it will be at the forefront of saving traditional papermaking techniques from extinction.

THE COLLABORATIVE CANVAS

The Collaborative Canvas is situated in the heart of Eastbourne, at The Enterprise Centre, providing ‘art for wellbeing’ workshops to individuals and small groups. We encourage individuals to come along to learn the basics of a variety of water based media and make connections, with informal instruction from our resident Art Facilitators.

SKELTON WORKSHOPS

A barn on the Artelium wine estate in East Sussex is now home to a creative haven: Skelton Workshops. Being close to Ditchling, Lewes and Streat with panoramic views of the surrounding idyllic Downland, it provides a marvellous learning environment. Here students of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds learn the tradition of hand carving and the skill of letter cutting.

Roz Nathan

Natural History Art, Courses and Demos

East Sussex-based Roz Nathan’s art practice has a Natural History focus. She takes part in Open Houses regularly and will be exhibiting artwork on Sussex Folklore with other artists at the Crypt, Seaford in June.

Roz is also a popular and very experienced tutor, running regular art courses as well as Zoom workshops.

Catriona Millar’s

Art Class, Eastbourne

There are very few opportunities to learn the traditional techniques of painting, particularly from an acclaimed artist, which makes Catriona Millar’s art class very special. Says Catriona, “We’ve had art students coming to the class to learn the basics of painting which their college no longer teaches. It’s a pleasure to pass them on and help people develop their work.” Catriona’s art class runs every Tuesday 11.30am to 1.30pm in Meads Village Hall, Eastbourne, and is ongoing.

JESSOPS FARM STUDIOS

Exciting Art Weekends

Jessops Farm Studios have a varied programme of exciting Art Weekends, set in the picturesque countryside of rural Kent – a friendly but intensive workshop experience to set the creative juices flowing.

Some new and inspiring themes will be explored. Cathy Bird and visiting tutors will encourage students to try out some processes they may not have used before along with re-visiting old friends afresh.

Portugal Art Retreat & local workshops

From 29th May to 3rd June in Quinta Galegas, Portugal, Julia is running a 5-day botanical and herb inspired art retreat along with daily herbal talks and walks with herbalist Vivienne Campbell.

Among the activities there will be art practice and sketching, art workshops, observational drawing, plant studies, mark making, meditative drawing exercises, and printing with plants, culminating in composition and designing a box canvas to bring home.

Light in the Darkness

Dianna will be exhibiting her stunning botanical works at the Artists Open Houses Festival, Brighton, each weekend in May at the Sussex Nightstop House, supporting the Sussex Nightstop Charity which provides overnight accommodation and support to young people aged 16-25. There will be an online auction of donated artwork by the participating artists with all sales going to Sussex Nightstop.

Nicola Rose, artist

The wild landscape paintings by professional artist Nicola Rose can be found in galleries in the south of England and also as far north as Shetland. Nicola has been painting the land, the sea and the weather for over thirty years. She travels extensively to remote locations, in recent years focusing on Scotland’s northern and western isles.

Preview of Spring Concerts 2025

After stunning performances with rave reviews in the autumn the Horsham Music Circle continues its 83rd Season with three contrasting programmes for Spring 2025.

On 15th February in St Mary’s Church the Sussex Chamber Players offer Mendelssohn’s Octet, the Sextet in E flat by Frank Bridge and string octet arrangements by Anna Cooper of Moskowski’s Bolero, Fauré Apres Un Reve and Duke Ellington’s Prelude to a Kiss.
In the Causeway Barn on 15th March International recorder player and Red Priest frontman Piers Adams joins forces with multi-talented keyboardist Lyndy Mayle in ‘Baroque Alchemy’, an extraordinary electro-baroque fusion duo.
May 10th at St Mary’s Church brings a resounding finish to the season when acclaimed quintet Onyx Brass plays for the 83rd Anniversary concert.

Award-winning producer Ellen Kent returns with three outstanding productions featuring the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv with international soloists, highly praised chorus and full orchestra.

Dramatic and heart-rending, Madama Butterfly is a new production with exquisite sets and fabulous costumes including antique wedding kimonos from Japan.
Directed by Ellen, La Bohème is another brand new production traditionally staged, the story of two young lovers in Paris, Rodolfo and Mimi, beset by poverty and ill-health.
La Traviata
is a tragic tale brimming with searing passion; love versus hypocracy and subterfuge.
All are filled with melodic, moving arias, and are sung in Italian with English surtitles.

ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS 

 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA  

After a hugely successful and well-received opening to their 2024-25 season, the RTWSO is presenting three further concerts early this year.

With performances from three international soloists, and programmes that include much-loved classics, the second half of the RTWSO’s season is not to be missed. In February, Alexandra Wood performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Guy Johnston presents Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in March, and the season closes in April with Rebecca Bottone’s stunning performance of Strauss’s Four Last Songs followed by Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Titan.
